Fintelekt - Asian Bankers Association Regional Workshop

Effective Transaction Monitoring and High-Quality STR Reporting

In-Person Workshop

17-18 September 2026

Bangkok, Thailand

As financial crime grows increasingly sophisticated and cross-border in nature, the Financial Action Task Force and by extension, regulators in each country, are shifting their focus from technical compliance to demonstrable effectiveness. It is no longer enough to have systems in place. Institutions must prove that their controls detect, disrupt, and report illicit activity in practice.

Fintelekt’s intensive two-day regional workshop aims to bring together AML/CFT compliance professionals from across the region to confront one of the most persistent challenges in the field: transforming transaction monitoring from a volume-driven, alert-clearing exercise into a genuinely intelligence-led capability that produces high-quality, actionable Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs).

Through a blend of expert-led sessions, practical case studies and peer discussions, participants will examine how to calibrate monitoring rules, reduce false positives, enrich alert investigations, and draft STRs that provide real value to Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs). By convening professionals from different countries, the workshop creates a rare opportunity to compare typologies, regulatory expectations, and practical solutions, recognising that criminal networks operate across borders, and so too must our collective response.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the global shift from technical compliance to measurable outcomes under the FATF framework and articulate what “effectiveness” means for transaction monitoring and reporting.
  • Design and optimise transaction monitoring scenarios using a risk-based approach rather than relying solely on rule-based thresholds.
  • Identify emerging money laundering, terrorist financing and sanctions evasion typologies reflected in transactional behaviour.
  • Strengthen investigation techniques by combining customer due diligence, transactional analysis, and by applying contextual and open-source intelligence.
  • Prepare clear, concise and intelligence-led STRs that meet FIU expectations and support downstream law-enforcement action.
  • Recognise common weaknesses that reduce the usefulness of STRs and learn practical methods to improve report quality.
  • Benchmark transaction monitoring practices against regional and international approaches through discussions with peers from multiple jurisdictions.
  • Explore how data analytics, technology and human judgement can work together to improve detection effectiveness while reducing false positives.
  • Develop metrics and management information that evidence the real-world impact of monitoring and reporting programmes to regulators and senior management.

Why Should You Attend?

  • Stay ahead of regulatory expectations.
Regulators are increasingly assessing outcomes, not just processes. Learn what “demonstrating effectiveness” looks like in practice before it becomes a finding in your next examination.
  • Fight a cross-border problem with cross-border insight.
Financial crime does not respect national boundaries. This workshop unites professionals from multiple countries, giving you direct access to diverse typologies, regulatory perspectives, and proven solutions you won’t find within a single jurisdiction.
  • Turn data into intelligence.
Move beyond clearing alerts. Gain practical techniques to sharpen your monitoring, cut noise, and produce STRs that genuinely support the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing.
  • Elevate the value of your function.
Learn how to evidence the impact of your compliance programme to senior management and regulators, positioning compliance as a strategic asset rather than a cost centre.
  • Build a lasting regional network.
Establish relationships with peers facing the same challenges, creating a community of practice that endures well beyond the two days.
  • Practical, not theoretical.
With real case studies, hands-on exercises, and facilitated peer exchange, you will leave with tools and approaches you can apply immediately.
